Catherine Parkes Latané, age 65, of Washington’s Birthplace passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017. She is survived by her devoted husband James W. Latané and their beloved daughter Claire Latané. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota to the late James H. Parkes and Blanche Pickrel Parkes, Cathy lived in various places as a child due to her father’s military career but once married to Jim she made Washington’s Birthplace her home. Cathy is survived by her sisters Sharon Knott Boyles (Terry) of Mechanicsville, VA and Hannah Jane McCammon (Sam) of Tennessee. Also surviving are cousins Luci Norman Whatley (Jim), Kris Porotsky (Rick), Rick Blair, Bonnye Blair, and Jere Blair. Cathy was a retired Administrative Assistant for the Virginia Cooperative Extension Agency. An inveterate animal lover, she leaves behind her beloved pug Nikki and family cats. Services will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Rod Gordon officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Saint Peter’s fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her memory to either Hospice of Virginia, P.O. Box 2098, Tappahannock, VA 22560; or to The American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd., Suite A102, Newport News, VA 23606; or to the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 159, Colonial Beach, VA 22443 (Attention: Memorials); or to the charity of your choice.
