Robert Malatin

Just received a message that we lost Robert Makatin.  Don't know any other info but will update as I know more.  Robert was a long time member of your High School Reunion Committee and will be missed.  Keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Robert M. Malatin, OD, 75, of Richmond, VA passed to his eternal home on July 15, 2022, in the York Hospital, York, PA, from cardiac complications. Robert was born May 16, 1947, the only son of the late Martin Paul and Margaret Olga (Babchek) Malatin.
Robert graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 1972 with a doctorates degree in optometry. By the time he retired in 2012 he owned three practices and had provided excellent and meticulous care to thousands of patients. He doted on his nieces and nephews and often said he lived vicariously through his sister's children and the events in their lives. He loved words and had a photographic memory sharing history, trivia, and obscure facts in an engaging way. He was inducted into the VA Academy of Optometry in 1983 and elected President of the same in 2009.Robert was raised in a Catholic home. Later in life, he chose to make the Lord His Savior and was baptized on that confession in a Baptist church. He had a simple faith and died with that peace.
He was a loving brother to Francine (Greg, deceased) Molner and special uncle to Andrea (Brandon) Williams, Jared, Chloe (Asher) Hess, Hannah (Micah) Bullen, Ezra, Ruth Anna (Jubal) Beachy, Isaac, Simeon (Mary), Hope (Nathan) Bullen, and Joanna (Jamin) Beachy, and their families.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at 3 PM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Ministers Richard Hess and Jesse Benedict will officiate. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in The Church Cemetery of the Brown's Mill Congregation, Chambersburg, PA. Online condolences may be offered on his Book of Memories page at www.geiselfuneralhome.com.

My eyes fell on Robert's photo this morning while reading the Times Dispatch.  How many of us kept up with him, not only at reunions, but once a year at his office?  He was an amazing eye doctor, and I loved the chance to chat with him each visit.

I'd just like to say to our fellow HHS graduates that Robert Malatin was a gentleman, a scholar and a good friend.  He never put himself first, always asking about my family and our mutual friends.  In his practice, he always knew more than the average optometrist, explaining whatever you needed to hear about your aging eyes.

Dear friend, you left us much too early.  I pray for your family and friends in their grief.

I was struggling with what to say about Robert so I'll just ditto Patricia's comments. What a great guy. He called  a few months ago to catch up always asking about my family and sharing reunion news. He never talked  about  his successes or his health and when asked he would say he was doing great. You will be missed. RIP Robert.

Robert and I talked often and he was going to come to my brother Jim's 50 wedding anniversary party in June. I called him a few days earlier but he did not answer and did not show for the party. I did not know of any serious health issues. He left too early. He will be missed.
