RAMSEY, Edward Jarratt Jr., M.D. "Jerry" entered into eternal life with a firm belief in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jerry lost his resolutely courageous battle with cancer on October 25, 2018. He was born to Edward J. and Hazel Hart Ramsey in Richmond, Va. in 1946. He graduated from Hermitage High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors from Hampden-Sydney College in 1969. At Hampden-Sydney, he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and Chi Beta Phi National Scientific Fraternity. He earned his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia in 1973 and was a member of AOA Honorary Society. Jerry is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 48 years, Patty; son, Jarratt and his wife, Buff; daughter, Catherine; and grandchildren, Jake and Sulli. He is also survived by his sister, Deborah Greene; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In Dallas, Texas, Jerry completed his Internal Medicine residency and gastrointestinal fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Parkland Hospital. He considered himself most fortunate to study there amid several Nobel laureates and under the tutelage of the eminent author and professor Dr. John Fordtran. He also spent a year on the faculty of the medical school. Jerry felt honored to be on the original research team that eventually led to the discovery that the h-pylori bacteria causes peptic ulcers. Years later, further research led to a Nobel Prize for Marshall and Warren, whose research cites Jerry's work. In 1979, he and Patty returned to Richmond, where he joined the medical practice of Richmond Gastroenterology Associates and practiced for 33 years. He served on the Board of Directors of Johnston-Willis Hospital and was the Chief of Medicine and the Chief of Gastroenterology for many years. His other professional accomplishments included memberships in the Virginia Gastrointestinal Society, in which he served as secretary for 12 years, as well as memberships in the Richmond Academy of Medicine and the Virginia Society of Medicine. He fully embraced the life his Creator so lovingly provided for him, taking great delight in his grandchildren! He loved traveling with Patty and their close friends to many areas of the world. The grape was also a passion and Jerry became a connoisseur of sorts of wine, which he thoroughly enjoyed! Jerry was fervently passionate about sports from an early age! He excelled in baseball as a youth and played on the varsity basketball teams in high school and college. After completing his medical training, tennis became a passion for him and his USTA 4.5 team won the National Championship in 1993 and made it to the Semi-Finals in 1995. In his later years, he enjoyed the game of golf tremendously and was named Senior Player of the Year at the Country Club of Virginia in 2013. He was a member of the Bogies Golf Group for 20 years, which he enjoyed immensely because of the fellowship and competition. Jerry's church membership was very important to him at Third Church, where he served as elder and deacon. In the community, he was a member of Richmond Cotillion and The Country Club of Virginia. He felt especially indebted to Dr. E. Forrest Jessee and Dr. Will Voelske for the excellent and compassionate medical care they provided. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Third Church or Needle's Eye Ministries.
