David Ward

David Ward

WARD, David Stephenson "Hap," of Richmond, passed away January 2, 2018, three days before his 71st birthday, with his family by his side. David was preceded in death by his mother and father, Jeanne M. and Robert H. Ward; and is survived by two brothers, Dennis (Rick) and Robert Ward; and loving cousins. A native Richmonder, David graduated from Hermitage High School in 1964 and attended RPI, now known as VCU. He served four years in the Army Reserves and received Veteran recognition from Governor McAuliffe last fall sponsored by Companion Extraordinaire. Back in the day, David co-owned two clubs in the area, "Idunno" and "Idunno Either." He followed in his dad's footsteps as an independent manufacturer's representative, traveling across seven states to accounts like Kings Dominion and Luray Caverns. Hap inherited his dad's nickname, Happy, because it fit him perfectly. He had the biggest smile, cared for others before himself, and had the most positive attitude. He was a mentor to his brothers, was their best friend, and kept them out of trouble before his parents found out. He played sports in high school and loved baseball. His favorite team, liked by his whole family, was the St. Louis Cardinals. He also loved UVA football, baseball and basketball. "Hard to believe" was one of his favorite quotes, and when asked how he felt his response was, "For an old fart I feel good!". Hap loved his church and the folks who belonged. Listening to the choir and preacher were his favorite parts of the service besides getting hugs from the special ladies afterward. A special thank you to his caring neighbors who were always there for him, along with the entire team from Companion Extraordinaire Home Care Services for their compassion and dedication. He loved spending time with Ginger, Barbara and Dawn. Hap, we love you, respect you, and look up to you as a best friend. We will miss you so much but know you are in a better place. A very special friend said, "God takes the best first"...Amen. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018, 11 a.m., at Lakeside United Methodist Church, 2333 Hilliard Road, with a reception immediately following in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, Glen Allen, Va., 804-967-2580.
