Catherine, who was a homemaker in McDonald, PA, passed away on October 1, 2009, in Canonsburg General Hospital, Canonsburg, Washington County, PA. She was survived her husband Robert Backus, daughters Catherine "Missy" Backus and  Donya McGinnis, son Robert W. Backus, grandchildren Connor McGinnis and Ian Backus, and nine brothers and sisters. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. She is buried at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Cecil, Washington County, PA.
