In Memory

Thomas Wayne Brown

Thomas Wayne Brown

Tommy was a nose guard in 1970 for Marshall College, now Marshall University, and was on the football team's chartered plan when it crashed at Huntington's Tri-State Airport on November 14, 1970. The crash was the worst in American sports history.  Tommy's body could not be identified, so he and five other players were buried in unmarked graves near the Marshall University Football Memorial.  The memorial, which is located in a newer section of Spring Hill Cemetery, overlooks the city and the university's campus.

Tommy was survived by his father, Bernard C. Brown, Sr., his mother, Frances C. Brown,  his sister, Shirley Brown, and brothers, Bernard C. Brown, Jr. and Donald J. Brown.

Tommy was in one of my U.S. History classes.   He was a nice, respectful young man.

I did not know Tommy and I never met him. But every time I see a clip about the movie he comes to mind.

And I have seen the movie several times.

I knew Tommy and remember him as #79 at HHS. I never knew about him being at Marshall. Once I moved to Fla.in 68 I didn't hear about any classmates. I am so sorry about Tommy. He was a great guy. I always cry when I watch the movie and not sure I could ever watch it again.

Tommy and I ran into each other playing ball at Lakeside school. I still have the scare on my head needed a few stiches. The movie brings back many memories, such a young man.

I remember Tommy from my first grade class at Lakeside on up through the grades until graduation.  I think Karen's description of him as a "gentle giant"  desribes  him well.  He was kind and a friend to many.  I didn't know he was a member of the Marshall team who died in the crash until years later.
