In Memory

Thomas Paul Landman

Thomas Paul Landman

The President of the United States of America presented posthumously the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Thomas Paul Landman, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on June 7, 1969, Binh Long Province, the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, while conducting a reconnaissance operation southwest of An Loc, elements of the squadron came under intense small arms, automatic weapons, and rocket-propelled grenade fire from an estimated enemy battalion. In the initial contact, Specialist Landman's tank received a direct hit, seriously wounding the vehicle commander. Seeing that his comrade was helplessly exposed to the hostile fusillade, Specialist Landman left his driver's hatch and moved to aid the wounded man. While pulling the casualty to the relative safety of the rear deck of the tank, Specialist Landman was mortally wounded by an exploding rocket-propelled grenade. Specialist Four Landman's courage, devotion to duty, and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldier were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.  His name is on The Wall:  panel W23 line 102.

Tom was survived by his father, Paul J. Landman, his mother, Rose D. Landman, and his brother, Loren Lee Landman. He is buried with his parents in Christ Church Cemetery, Barnesville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, USA.  Tom was the only member of the HHS Class of '67 to be KIA in the Vietnam War.

Bruce - This is such a lovely tribute to Tommy.  Sometimes, even our briefest encounters with people can leave us with vivid memories that last a lifetime.

Dear Bruce,

Thank you for sharing Tommy's story..  I can't even imagine the sorrow his family experienced. I am grateful to both of you for serving our country.  It is important for us to remember our classmates that were so much part of our lives.

I still remember being a candy striper volunteer at Richmond Memorisl when Donald Bass was fighting for his life .

Thank you, Bruce!

Thank you for taking the time on Memorial Day to help us all remember our classmates, relatives, and friends who served in Viet Nam. These soldiers are sometimes forgotten because of all the controversy surrounding this war. I am so glad Tommy had a soldier buddy.

Hope to see you at the 50th reunion.

I'm not sure I remember Tom from senior year, but I will remember him and give thanks for his service after reading Bruce's tribute.  I also appreciate the service of  Bruce and all those who have dedicated their years and even lives to serving our nation, including many others in our class.  Memorial Day and Veteran's Day call us to remember the contributions of many.

Thanks for posting this!  I did not know Tommy.  Your tribute was very touching.

Very troubling times.  As a Navy Vet I managed to basically stay out of harms way but the guys on the ground were always on my mind while I did my part to keep them alive.

I, too, did not know Tom. But I am thankful for his service to OUR "GREAT" COUNTRY. And the many others

who SACRIFICED their lives. And for those who continue to put their lives on the line for us.

It is hard for me to remember much about Tom.  Perhaps he was someone who did not spend every year with our class.

He was way braver than I have ever been.
