I remember Edma Mae as a gentle soul and good friend to the "new girl" in our freshman year, a very tough adjustment for me coming back to China Lake for the third time after living amongst my parents' family for four years of pure bliss in the big metro area of Detroit. I regret that we did not stay close as a began to date Steve Martin and did not find ourselves in classes together. We did end up at graduation standing right next to each other, smiling and enjoying the day! She lived in San Diego for years but I never had any luck finding her. May she rest in peace in the afterlife as the pure soul she was and now in pure joy! I will remember her always.
She was the only black girl our age at Monroe. It must have been a trying time for her. I think it would have been for me in that situation. She was a nice girl. I hope she had a happy life. .
Edna lived down the street from me, so we rode the bus to and from school together. Since she was my nearest classmate living nearby, we sometimes hung out together. We had a lot of laughs about the most inane things! She was really a gentle but genuine person. She worked hard at her school work, and was a huge support to her family. When I learned of her death, I was saddened. She will remain a bright memory of my years at Burroughs.
