Ruth Penny Orrenmaa

Paraphrased from what was published in the Press-Enterprise on January 20, 2011:

Beloved Riverside teacher for over 50 years, died in her sleep January 1, 2011, in San Diego, California.  she was a popular and admired language teacher at Ramona HIgh School with a special love for Latin, French and ancient history.  The Latin club, which she founded, was famous for its yearly Latin Banquet.  She spoke 6 languages.  Known for her love of travel, she brought students with her to over 40 countries.  She shared her passion for teaching with her husband, Allan J Orrenmaa, who preceded her in death in 1965.  A teacher and principal, Orrenmaa Elementary School is named in his honor.  For 45 years she has continue to award a scholarship in his name to Alvord district seniors.

Graveside service to be held Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Olivewood Cemetary.

John Joseph Ortega (1964)

She was my Latin teacher for two years who became a personal and professional role model. When I became a teacher myself, I did my best to emulate her caring, supportive, always positive approach to students. Rest in peace, Mrs. O. -- John Ortega, '64
