Richard Alan Newton, 62, beloved son, stepson, brother, cousin, and friend went to be with Jesus Saturday, February 22, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.
Richard was born January 8, 1952 and was a graduate of Northside High School and Bridgewater College; and was part of the football teams at each school.
After receiving his degree from Bridgewater College in 1975, Richard worked in the Roanoke County and City of Salem School systems as a teacher and assistant football coach for several years before opening his State Farm Insurance Agency February 1, 1978. Richard retired from State Farm in 2010 after suffering a heart attack.
He was a member of Troutville Church of the Brethren where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Richard had a deep faith and an assurance that whatever happened, he would be all right.
Richard loved being with old friends at Bridgewater football games, family gatherings, beach trips with friends and family, fishing, and hunting. A regular at his favorite restaurants, it wasn’t unusual for “everybody to know his name.”
Richard cherished each member of his large and loving family and was blessed with a dear church family and a host of caring friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his father, Phil S. Newton in 2009; paternal grandparents Jesse M. Newton (Grace and Evelyn); maternal grandparents Karl and Lucille L. Rader; his beloved brother-in-law Thomas C. Clayton in 2008; uncles Roy E. Webb and Lewis Wright; aunts and uncles Aundria N. Wilson (Bob), Morene N. Turnbull (James), Eugene Newton (Catherine); and cousins Kathy Newton Agee and Lynn Turnbull.
