Davy Crockett, 81, of Roanoke passed away on Monday, April 10, 2017. He was the youngest of eleven children. Davy was born in Tazewell County on December 9, 1935 to Gene and Mable Crockett who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Dr. E. V. Crockett, Warren, Jack, Sedwyn, Tommy Joe, Hargus. He is survived by his wife, Martha; sons, Allen Crockett and his wife, Michele and his children, Megan, Austin and Justin Garber, Lee Crockett and Michelle Donato; brothers and sisters, Ralph Crockett, June C. Browne, Betty C. Gillie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Davy was a loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. A graduate of Tazewell High School, a BS degree from Lynchburg College and a Masters from Virginia Tech. Completing college he received a direct commission in the army as a Second Lt., stationed at Brook Army Medical Center where he served as an entomologist in the 714 Medical Company. When he completed his tour of duty he returned to Virginia where he began his career as a dedicated teacher. He taught at Richlands, North Cross and Northside High Schools. Davy was a member of Colonial Avenue Baptist Church where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School and Scout leader. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Science Museum. Davy was a man of many talents. He painted pictures for family and friends. His woodworking skills were on furniture and children’s toys. In the summer he would raise a large garden and share with the neighbors. Most of all he enjoyed his family, taking his family fishing and camping. As they got older they would spend vacation time with the family.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall.
