Daphne McDuffie Friedman
January 16, 1953 - August 19, 2023
The daughter of the late Robert Seymour Friedman Sr. and the late Rubinelle McDuffie Friedman, Daphne was born in Rock Hill and acquired most of her education there. After starting at Rock Hill High School, she completed high school at Vardell Hall (Red Springs, NC). She continued her education at Sullins College (Bristol, VA) and King's College. Daphne worked at Eastern Airlines and completed her work career as an account manager at Kaiser Permanente.
In addition to her parents, Daphne was preceded in death by her brother Robert "Bob" Seymour Friedman Jr.
To mourn her loss, Daphne leaves her daughters Rachel Bumgarner Willis and Amanda "Mimi" Bumgarner Hines plus her sister Belinda Friedman Gergel and several grandchildren.
At this time, there is no obituary with funeral plans.
Here is a tribute her daughter Rachel placed on Daphne's Facebook page:
Yesterday my incredibly strong mom, Daphne , broke free from cancer and traveled on from this world.
There are no words that could possibly contain the magnitude of grief I feel. My heart breaks as a daughter, and again as a mom, watching Cole mourn the loss of his partner in crime.
Daphne was a beautiful, courageous, and fiercely loving mom, grandma, sister, and friend. She was one of the funniest people I have ever met, and she could outwork men half her age. She was tough, but she was tender. And her family was the center of her world.
She taught me how to be brave.
She taught me how to be resilient.
She taught me how to be a mom.
My mother loved music, just like she loved all of the extra things that make life special.
Flowers. Cupcakes. Cocktails. Canasta.
Dressing up, giving gifts. The Nutcracker at Christmas with her grandkids.
She savored the sweet things.
I will never hear the Temptations without seeing her snap her fingers and shake her hips. I will never hear Aretha Franklin without hearing Mom sing along from her soul.
Today I celebrate the incredible woman who made me who I am. She will live on her grand babies, her gardens, and in her recipes. She will forever reign as the Queen of the Lemon Pie, and no one should ever attempt to get merengue to stand up like hers.
She may not be with us, but she is here.
She will always be here.
I’ll forever challenge myself to face the hands that life deals me with the tenacity that she did.
She never blinked.
She never backed down.
She got dressed, put on some fabulous jewelry, & stared adversity in the eye with a smile.
She was a beautiful and brave champion.
