CARING BRIDGE May 20, 2022 Journal Entry by Cheryl Hoffman (written by her husband Tommy Evans)

This is the hardest post I have ever written so it may ramble, please forgive me for that. Also, I don't have the best proof reader in the world anymore so there may be other errors as well.

I wanted to let everyone who has followed and prayed during Cheryl's almost 3 1/2 year battle with Glioblastoma know that she went to heaven at 12:44 am on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Thank God he blessed us with the ability to keep her at home throughout the final struggle that started in January. Cheryl died in my arms while I was stroking her beautiful hair, which she always loved. I truly don't believe she was in any pain as God took her home.

As you know, Cheryl was a very strong willed person and fought valiantly but Glioblastoma just never lets go. I can remember after the first of two brain surgeries, they gave her at the most 15 months to live. God, thank you for giving her the strength to defy that pronouncement and for allowing us to share her life for over twice that time.

Please say a final prayer asking God to keep her in his arms and to join with all of the family and friends that have gone on before her.

She was my rock, my wife, and my partner. I will be completely lost without her. Below is the obituary that will be posted in the Rock Hill newspaper. At the end of the obituary are details on the memorial service celebrating Cheryl's life.

Cheryl Elaine Platt Hoffman was born on August 29, 1954, in Rock Hill, SC, to Bill and Doris Platt, the third of four children. She departed for Heaven on May 18, 2022, at home with her loving husband, Tommy Evans.

Cheryl attended public school in Rock Hill and graduated in 1971 from Rock Hill High School. She obtained a bachelor’s degree from Winthrop College in Interior Design. In her youth, she enjoyed playing softball. She didn’t much like to cook, but her sister and husband swear she was the best sous chef ever!

Cheryl had a long and successful career of thirty-seven years with Duke Energy. Cheryl started her career at the Catawba Nuclear Plant while it was under construction and transferred to the headquarters in Charlotte upon Catawba’s completion. She was promoted into Supply Chain management where she achieved the role of Purchasing Manager for the Fossil Fuel portion of the business. Many colleagues remember her long tenure with Duke; she was a leader, a super team member, and a wonderful mentor. She was dearly loved by all.

Cheryl is preceded in death by both parents. She is survived by her loving husband, one sister, and two brothers and their families. She is also survived by one son, Andrew Boyd and his wife, Melanie, and their three children and three grandchildren.

She acquired two bonus families, Larry & Rebecca Evans, with the adorable grand twins and Daniel & Cindy Evans, when she married Tommy. Cheryl also had two bonus daughters: her niece, Stefanie Clakeley, and her dear friend, April Seraphin.  She was their confidante and they looked up to her. April and her partner, Matt Bugbee, supported Cheryl and Tommy throughout her long battle with Glioblastoma and often brought meals, played dominoes, and shared other common interests.

Cheryl loved to travel and enjoyed her second home in Thunderbolt, GA , where she spent many days with her bonus family. She took her parents to Ireland once and enjoyed many adventures with her family. She especially loved the beach and boating on the Intercoastal Waterway around Savannah!

By this description of her family and friends, it is apparent that she was blessed and she blessed many others.

A memorial service to celebrate Cheryl’s life will be held at 2pm on June 11, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church of Rock Hill. There will be a short service in the sanctuary and then a time to celebrate the joy Cheryl brought to everyone after the service. The church address is 234 East Main St. Rock Hill, SC.
