Alfonso Nicosia, 41, of Rock Hill, S.C. died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday in a Rock Hill hospital. A 1949 graduate of Concord College, Athens, West Virginia, Mr. Nicosia moved to Rock Hill in 1955 to accept the band director position for Rock Hill City Schools after six years as band director at Fayetteville High School in West Virginia. He was a member of St. Johns Methodist Church (Rock Hill, SC), the Elks Club, National Teachers Association, and National Bandmasters Association. While bandmaster in Rock Hill and assisted by Mr. Louie Hoff, the organziation experienced great growth with the high school band participating in several national events, most notably the Orange Bowl game in 1957.

Survivors included his wife, since 7/14/1951, Mary Jean Groscup Nicosia of Rock Hill; two sons, Gary* and Keith, both of the home; his father, Felix Nicosia of Mount Hope, West Virginia; a sister, Mrs. Santin Ciccarcllo of Charleston, West Virginia; and one brother, Charles Nicosia of Wayne, Michigan. The funeral was held in St. Johns Methodist Church November 5, 1968 at 4 p.m.  Burial was in Laurelwood Cemetery** in Rock Hill. The family requests contributions be sent to the music scholarship of Rock Hill High School.*** The body was at Bass Funeral Home in Rock Hill.

  *Fellow RHHS 1971 graduate Gary Wayne Nicosia died in 2009.
