I will miss Barb so much.  I think we have known each other for almost 70 years.  One of my first memories of us is walking home from Beach School together on Detroit Road.  (It’s hard to believe that we were allowed to walk home without an adult, but I think we were.) Anyway, as we were walking along Barbara announced that we were colaxing, by which she meant that we were walking in step.  I think I was in my twenties before I discovered that “colaxing” was not a real word, but a gem from Barb’s rich imagination.  I still use it when I walk with my grandchildren.

She was so clever and wise, so well-read, and sane; always full of good advice, and a great listener. I think that she must have been a wonderful teacher, rather like our beloved French teacher, Mme. Walther.  And I’m sure she was a wonderful mother, and grandmother.  She always seemed to turn the conversation to you rather than herself.  Even when we met in September, she gave no hint of the pain and illness that she was facing.

As adults, we were, of course, separated by continents and oceans, but we managed to keep in touch, and met up at too widely spaced intervals, in Rocky River, in London, in Paris, and most recently in Montreal.  The remarkable thing about our friendship, is that, however long it had been, when we had a chance to speak, we always seemed to fall right back into step – colaxing indeed!
