I was fortunate to be one of Phil's friends.  Not because our lives followed similar paths or we stayed in touch through life.  They didn't and we didn't.  But Phil was the unabridged definition of a friend.  No matter how small, Phil followed through on a commitment.  Need help?  Just ask Phil.  Headed overseas?  Phil would get the group together for the send off.  Don't worry about the wife and child while your gone, Phill would check in periodically to be sure they were ok.  Phil would even stop by the parents with a word of support,  Lose a parent in an accident? Phil was there at the visitation with a memory and word of encouragement.

We last spoke at the 20th reunion, but more often than not, Phil was the example of how friends should treat friends heard by the grandkids.  Phil even provided the funny lead-in to make the life discussion memorable.   Phil would probaby have said, " JP, you must have better examples."  But he'd be wrong.  Rest in peace friend.
