Classmate Larry Wayne Gentry died on Saturday morning, September 28, 2024, after a lengthy illness. Obituary via Brooks & White,
Larry Wayne Gentry, 74, of 1000 Gentry-Dunkley Road, Roxboro, passed away on Saturday, September 28. A lifelong resident of the Allensville community in Person County, Larry was the son of the late Charles Augusta and Pauline Foushee Gentry. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1975, a grandson, Clay Edward Barker, in 1999, and his brother, Mike Gentry.
Larry took great pride in his work ethic, often juggling multiple jobs to provide for his family. He was a dedicated tobacco farmer and spent many years at Northern Telecom. Additionally, he worked in construction, delivered newspapers, and founded his own stump grinding and tree removal business, LWG Farms. Larry frequently helped those who couldn’t afford tree work and delivered firewood to those in need and to the Christian Help Center.
In his hunting community, he was known as "Muleskinner." He cherished spending time outdoors, hunting, and running dogs with his son, Kyle, and grandsons, Preston and Sam. Family outings often included riding three-wheelers and searching for arrowheads on Sunday afternoons. Larry looked forward to camping trips and horseback riding in the scenic mountains of North Carolina and Virginia with friends.
To his grandchildren, he was lovingly known as “Pop.” They will forever treasure memories of riding horses, tractors, and four-wheelers together. Each Christmas, Pop gifted every family member a knife with the date and a note.
A devoted member of Allensville United Methodist Church, Larry served in various capacities and particularly enjoyed the annual Harvest Sale and Stew, as well as singing in the choir.
Larry is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Cecil Barker of Semora; his son and best friend, Kyle Gentry of Roxboro; his granddaughter, Allie Barker of Cambridge; and his grandsons, Preston Barker of Greenville and Samuel Barker of Semora. He is also survived by his former wife, Margie D. Gentry, and his brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Sandra Gentry of Roxboro.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 4, at 11 a.m. at Allensville United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Hal Dickerson and the Rev. Jack Ruth will officiate, with burial of his ashes to follow in the church cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will include Preston Barker, Samuel Barker, Tim Dickerson, James Wilson, Steve Bray, Curtis Holiday, Kenny Lovell, and Bob Flick.
Memorials may be made to the Allensville United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 80 Dirgie Mine Road, Roxboro, NC 27574.
