Michael Ellis Hoggan, was called home by our Loving Heavenly Father on Monday, April 2, 2018. He was born July 2, 1955 to James Ellis Hoggan and Lois Renee (Parkinson) in Ogden, UT. He always spoke of his childhood as an adventure, often a mischievous one at that. He loved his parents and sisters dearly, his childhood stories and memories were filled with pranks, swimming and his cousin Bart. At a young age his parents divorced and his mother was re-married to Mike Tinglestad. He lived in many different places with his mother and step-father, Washington, Florida, The Philippines, Las Vegas, Kansas and Texas. In 7th grade he moved back to Utah to live with his father. Mike spent a great deal of his time at this point with his grandmother, Elizabeth Hoggan (Pat). He adored her, always speaking of her with love, devotion and gratitude for her constant presence and the guidance she gave him. As a youth he participated in Boys’ State, loved to fish, and worked with his dad on the rentals. He graduated from Roy High, in Roy, Utah.
He met the love of his life, Judy Ann (Briggs) in high school. They were married March 15th, 1974 for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Utah temple. They were truly committed to each other and it showed in their relationship. Mike was very thoughtful and giving as a husband, always striving to make Judy happy or to hear her laugh. His heart ached for her after her passing. They were the proud parents of two children, Zachary Ellis Hoggan (Lisa) Wellington, CO and Amanda Elizabeth Wild (Douglas) Billings, MT, and the grandparents to eight delightful grandchildren. Adelaide (9) James (7) Audryn (4) Joseph (1) Jarod (16) Morgan (12) Alexander (9) Makenzie (6).
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, father, and beloved wife.
Mike had a heart of gold. He was very kind and truly lived his beliefs in regards to how he treated others from the stranded stranger he would never pass by, to his neighbors, co-workers and family. He would strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone and could keep it going for hours. He loved to make people laugh, and was fluent in finding silver linings in tough situations. He loved to cook and BBQ, becoming a self- taught master at the grill. He was a fierce friend who would do anything for you. He simply loved life.
He worked hard to provide for his family, over his life having many different careers, including managing hardware stores, as well as owning his own hardware store. He managed a credit bureau and eventually honed his skills at counseling and helping others with their finances, which was his passion. He loved helping and teaching others. He served on many local non-profit boards and different groups in the communities where he lived. All of which was very important to him.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Serving in many callings, but his favorite was teaching primary with his wife. He loved his Heavenly Father, and had a strong testimony of the Restored Gospel.
Mike struggled with diabetes his entire adult life having many other health challenges as well. He met each one with a willingness to learn from it and a determination to make the best of it. He was blessed to have a close friend (Maryann Marshall) donate her kidney to him, in a successful transplant that gave him a new lease on life and 15 more years with his family. He was so grateful for each and every day he was given.
After losing Judy last year to cancer, Mike courageously faced the world alone. He was strong and independent. He used this time to magnify his role as father and grandfather. He was devoted to his family to his dying breath. He loved them each dearly. He was blessed with amazing neighbors at this time that helped him when needed. He died of natural causes.
Mike was survived by his 4 sisters (Kristy Lynn, Sheryl Hoggan, Debbie Lee and Lori Wilkinson Murray), step-mother (Judy Johnson), step-father (Mike Tingelstad), two children and eight grandchildren. He was so appreciated and loved. He will be missed beyond measure.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday April 10, 2018 at the Billings, MT LDS Stake Center 2929 Belvedere Drive, Billings, MT 59102. Friends and Family may visit Monday April 9, 2018 from 5pm to 7pm at Smith Funeral Chapel West, 304 34th St. West, Billings, MT 59102 and from 10:00am to 10:30am on Tuesday prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Billings Habitat for Humanity in his name.
