In Memory

Stephen French (Stephen French)

Stephen French (Stephen French)

Steve was one special guy!  Even though he did not graduate from El Camino, he grew up with most of us attending the same elementry schools and finally El Camino through his Junior year.

Steve joined the Navy in the 60's and served most of his time as a Radio Communication Technician in Okinawa. After the service he attended Sacrmento State obtaining his Teaching Credentials, He taught at various elementary schools ending his teaching career at Star King, many of us attended SK much earlier in our lives. He went on to form French Plumbing doing residential construction, then wraping up his career in Real Estate with some very fine Commercial ventures.

Steve was one of those special persons who was liked by all and will always be in our memories.

Steve may you rest in peace.

Please, if any of you can help with additional information such as survivors etc. please feel free to contact me or add with your personal comments.

Stephen, Christie Dunbar and I lived in the same neighborhood.  We would gather at Christie's house where her mother and grandmother would feed us, mentally and physically.  Stephen would entertain us with his delightful sense of humor.  I'm thankful for those happy memories.

When I walked in to the class Christmas gathering in December 2016 Steve called me by name. I sat down right across a table from him. We had a good conversation remembering old times and his experiences with his plumbing company. He was a very intelligent and personable guy.  I will miss him.

Coe looked me up and talked about the planning meetings for our 50 year reunion.  I hadn't seen anyone (except Ahlquist) since high school.  Navigating to the backroom at Sam's I walked up to French and said, "I'm looking for you and Thompson."  He said, "We lost Lance a long time ago."

Steve seemed to know everyone.  I tried to introduce him to Orphan, Bernardo, Juno...but he felt more comfortable at Sam's.  The distance was part of it.  He'd get tired in the afternoons.  We talked about how lucky we were to be born in our time and place.  How when we grew up we could run wild on our bikes.  He loved the neighborhood and had a modest, tract house that he never quit improving.

Recently we spent what seemed like hours in his backyard talking about everything.  I told him, "You look good."  He said, "No.  I'm not."  At the '16 Christmas party I leaned into him, "We didn't get a chance to really talk."  He said, "We'll get together."
