I was saddened to hear of Mikes passing; Mike was born at camp, that generally meant that he had an affinity with everyone who got “relocated” in WW2.
And in Sacramento that meant both side of the Broadway divide (those who went to Sac High) . As a whole unassuming and friendly. I used to think In our days at McClatchy that Asians were too small to be playing “football” with the blockbuster guys. But you showed us Mike; and every run you made, you were carrying the ball for all of us, as we cheered you on.
Rest in Peace dear friend

Dear Mike,
I remember you as a great person who was a steady presence in those three years at McClatchy. You were quiet but that masked a strong self determination that many people did not notice. In football you were a vital member of two championship teams and without you we would not have won the last championship in '62. I am glad you were recognized for the All-City football team and it was well deserved. Thank you also for your years of service to McClatchy athletics and the young people you mentored.
I saw you last fall at the sports dinner and you looked very fit for someone of our age. That said, it was quite a shock to hear of your passing. My thoughts and condolences go out to your family. You were too young to have your life cut short. We lost a good man.

Mike was a wonderful person whom I recalled often. We played a lot of sports together and he was one of the best , no matter the sport.
My deepest sympathy to his family
His passing brought some tears as he was a close friend growing up.
I have no doubts he will become a plus 6 up there!

I remember Mike's great football accomplishments, his discrete strength--and was happy to see him at the reunion last September... His passing at such a young age is truly a shock. My sincere condolences to his family. Rest in peace, dear Mike.

I played on the J.V. football team for a very short time with Mike. He was alway friendly and good natured. He was promoted to the varsity team and I still recall his stunning running skill. He got the ball on the Thanksgiving Day Game kick off. There was a pile up of both sides at mid field blocking his run, so he just ran over the top of the pile. Awesome even now.
He was a great example for me. I'm sorry he is gone so soon, I wish his family well.

It just shows how out of touch we can become. I heard about Mike's passing last September (2017) while on a road trip back to Sacramento from my current home here in Evanston, IL. I was always in awe of Mike's constant positive attitude. He was an inspiration to me because he always got A's in all his classes. And, man, what an athlete. Even in basketball with his small stature and small hands, Mike would burn you with the most graceful jump shot you ever saw! I was able to see him and some other buddies on previous trips back to Sacto. He bowled in a league and would play a lot of golf. Will miss him dearly.

I used to call them the "TWO MIKES". Mike Nishio and Mike Kihara. Both excellent athletes, both with a quiet, demure side. What impressed most was their strength of character. These were guys you could count on when the chips were down, and all of us, at one game or another, knew they would come through. It was just in their nature to do these miraculous things. And there was another side; I never saw either of them judge another human being; perhaps it was their upbringing, more likely it was their humble approach to life. They were my friends; I miss them. My only regret is knowing how good these men were, and yet not telling them so, the last time (reunions) I saw them. There's a lesson here, for all of us, for the past, and for the future. Don't miss the next reunion, and don't hesitate to tell those people you care about how good they made our memories.
