Jim H. Van Herweg

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024 at the age of 78. The son of the late Henry and Maurine (Struble) Van Herweg was born on April 13, 1946 in Saginaw, Michigan. Jim graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1964. In 1965 he began his career as an apprentice electrician for the IBEW local 557. In 1969, Jim completed the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee program and passed the City of Saginaw and State of Michigan journeyman electrical examination, to become a JIW (Journeymen Inside Wireman). An entrepreneur at heart, Jim founded Van Herweg Electric Incorporated in 1984, while joining NECA (National Electrical Contractors Association) in 1986 he served in multiple leadership roles for the organization. After a long and rewarding career Jim decided to retire and turn over the business to his son, Chad, who continues to serve the Saginaw community.
He loved spending time with his family and many friends, at his cottage at Big Lake in Sears MI, Jim played an active role in the community as president of the Big Lake Association for 6 years.
An adventurous soul, Jim loved to travel, he especially loved taking cruises and sail ships to the Caribbean islands, he visited the Amazon not once but twice and traveled from Chile around Cape Horn to Argentina, he visited Peru, Ecuador, Bora Bora and many other exotic places. He also enjoyed traveling through the United States, some of his favorite places were New York, San Francisco, San Diego, Key West, Jackson Hole, Alaska, and Montana. Out of all the trips, some of his favorites were the annual NECA conventions. Jim’s personality, hard work, and love will be remembered by all of those who knew him.
Surviving to cherish his memory besides his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara Van Herweg, a son, Chad (Melissa) Van Herweg; grandchildren, Katie (Mark) Kleinbriel, Emily, Sydney (Derek), and Conner Van Herweg; siblings, Bob (Susan) Van Herweg, Judy Van Herweg, Dan (Sheri) Van Herweg; son-in-law, Mark Feiger; many nieces, nephews and friends. Jim is happily reunited with his parents and daughter, Carrie Ann Van Herweg.
In honor of Jim’s favorite holiday, 4th of July, his family will continue to make contributions to the fireworks fund at Big Lake.
Honoring Jim and his family’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will take place Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St John Vianney, 6400 McCarty Road Saginaw Michigan. Friends may visit with the family at Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd., Saginaw, Michigan 48603 (between Shattuck and McCarthy), on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
