Doug Alkright wote...Our classmate, and my childhood friend, John R Nagel, passed away September 6, 2018. He bravely fought leukemia caused by his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. He left behind his wife Cristee’. I attended his funeral in Florida and talked to a few of his army buddies and his commanding officer. They considered “Doc” a hero. He served as a medic and saved many lives in the midst of battle. He received 2 Bronze Stars: for Valor, and for Meritorious Service. He also was awarded a Purple Heart, the Air Medal, the National Defence Service Medal, the Vietnam Service & Campaign Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. That sounded so much like John. He met adversity head on. So long for now good friend. I’ll see you again. Doug

I'm so sorry for you loss Doug.  I didn't know John...wish I did.

.Vaguely remember you guys, but a man goes to war with valor in his mind, and lives through the horrendous memories of the possible worst conditions held in mind, I have only the deepest respect...Many end in taking their own lives, and this must one day end, for real!!!......

.And a medic is an amazing position for strength...Reminds of hacksaw ridge, this man, Doss, saved 75 lives during wwIl....one at a time lowered down to safety without a weapon in hand....war is hell....Today it fills me with rage, and evil needs to be eliminated from the human mind....And in time it will...I write on the subject matter......, politics, and religions as a ritualistic matter will end.....the art of living together, and the sciences, and technological innovations, inspiration, imagination of good form, and transitional advancement to future better life are all part of my writings......My neighbor served in Nam, and we are close enough that he told me part of the horror...he witnessed his best buddy a few hundred feet away from him, blown apart into pieces by friendly fire bombing, on missed coordinates, near their position.....our own fucking bombs.......he still has nightmares........War is insanity........We all are so very much a part of each other, and in time it must be acknowledged.....For Doug, man, you hang in there, and stay strong!.....A faith so strong, I am 24/7 in prayer for you, that some kind of goodness in thinking comes from your pain in sorrow, from hearing your message, I have you on my mind!......We need to change the world we live in!!!.....Peace!

I was introduced to John by Doug Akright, Bob Moeller and Larry Csutora in the 11th grade.  I did not know him well, but, considered John a friend and we had a few adventures together.  He and I corresponded while we were in the service.  I was in the Navy on the USS America CVA 67 (flight deck - avaition ordnance) in the Tonkin Gulf while John was "in country" in mid- to late-1968.

I was not able to stay in touch for long, but, always wondering what may have happened to him.  Thanks, Doug, for the update and some background information on our classmate.  Rest In Peace John..............Dean Allen

John and I grew up across the street from each other.  He was a wild one when a kid, but sure grew into his purposes in life.  From all the medals I see, he was an American Hero, and lived a worthy life.  Lost touch many years ago, glad to see he lived a full life in the time he had.
