Peter Cayias

December 20, 1935 ~ September 1, 2017
Peter W. G. Cayias passed away peacefully in his home on September 1, 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was born on December 20, 1935 to George Cayias and Dorothy Zolintakis Cayias. Peter was a graduate of East High School and The University of Utah, and attended Law School at The University of Wyoming.
Peter was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and played both tennis and football in his college years. He served in the US Navy and was mentored by the Admiral on the USS Bon Homme Richard, who encouraged Peter to pursue his entrepreneurial spirit.
Peter went on to become a partner in the Cayias Insurance Agency, and became involved in many community organizations such as the Salt Lake Shriners, El Kalah Temple, the SL Jr. Chamber of Commerce, and the Masons.
Peter was devoted to his Greek Orthodox faith and Greek heritage. He served as President of the Greek Orthodox Church, was involved in both the AHEPA and Minos organizations, and was an Archon of the Greek Orthodox Church.
He was an incredibly dedicated son, and lived to make his parents proud of him. He spent many of his later years taking care of his mother, and would tell hilarious stories about all of the "ladies jokes" he would pretend not to overhear in the hair salon when he chaperoned her.
Peter had a great sense of humor and loved to tease people - especially if he liked them. His favorite question to ask any friends or godchildren of their dates was "are they a clean plater?" If so, they were a keeper in his eyes!
Peter was incredibly blessed to have a great team of caregivers, led by Sr. Helpers (Tom Turner, and his staff), thus enabling him to stay in his home until his passing, as he wished. We thank them for their support and compassion over the years, along with Fr. Elias, Dr. Phil Kithas and Superior Hospice.
A viewing will be held at Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, 5335 S. Highland Drive, on Wednesday, September 5, 2017, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. (Trisagion Prayer Service at 10:30 a.m.), followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Mount Olivet Cemetery.
