Leonard Begay, Jr passed away August 2, 2007.He was born on February 12, 1951
in Ganado, Arizona to Edith Curley and Leonard Begay, Sr. He was raised in
Salt Lake City, Utah.
He graduated from East High School. He served in the Marine Corps during the
Vietnam War. He went on to college and became and electrician. He really loved
his family and did all he could for them.
Son, Brother, Uncle and Nephew we will miss your smile and laughter. God has
taken you from us to a better place to watch over us. You will never be
forgotten and will remain in our hearts Forever Big Bear & Strong Warrior.
He is preceded in death by his father Leonard Begay, Sr, Grandma and Grandpa
Begay. He is survived by his Mother- Edith Begay, Brothers- Herman, Raynold,
Leslie, Melvin, Sisters- Harriet and Joe Chavez, Mary, Lenore, Gloria and
Isidro Roybal, Uncles and many nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 6, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Deseret
Memorial Mortuary, 36 E. 700 S. with a viewing will be held Sun. evening,
August 5, 2007 from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services.
Burial services will take place at Camp Williams Cemetery, 17111 S. Camp Williams Rd,
Bluffdale. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.memorialutah.com

I was aware of Leonard's death when I happened to see the obituary in the paper (one of his younger brothers followed several years later). I became acquainted with Leonard back in my junior high years when his family moved in next door to mine. He was a close friend & had a self-depreciating sense of humor. He was very thick-skinned considering all the "cultural" razzing he got from friends & foes alike. The remainder of his family eventually moved in next door to my in-laws. He was by that time long moved out, married & working as an electrician. We spoke several times. He was basically the same old Leonard Begay. A great buddy left all he touched.

Thank you Verdo for sending that in. I have wondered, especially when I went to Jacob Lake, what had happened to Leonard. I remember a long conversation we had about Northern Arizona and Monument Valley. He was as strong a person as he was quiet around strangers.
After all the time he spend being razzed about being quiet and Indian, he always kept his head, I only remember one time he got into a fight and it was someone bullying his little brother.
I am glad he found happiness and peace in life.

I knew Leonard all through High School, we hung out with mutual friends and had a lot of fun. He was a good friend, and I think of him still and probably always will. We lost touch after I married and I am sorry for that.

Lleonard was a good friend that I loved to be around every chance I got. Truly a gental giant. They say that still waters run deep and that was true with Leonard. I'm glad to have known him and to call him friend.
