In Memory

Dan Carl

Dan Carl

Daniel Forrest Carl

Our Brother/ Our Friend

Daniel was born in Salt Lake City on September 13, 1948 at Holy Cross Hospital to Charlotte Mitchell Carl and Paul Felkner Carl. Daniel passed away in his sleep on March 10, 2015.

Dan attended Douglas Elementary School, Stewart Elementary and Junior High School and graduated from East High School in 1966. He served in the United States Air Force and the Utah Air National Guard. He worked diligently at the US Postal Service for 30 years. In his retirement years, he dedicated himself to recycling just about everything that crossed his path! His intentions were always the best. Beneath his crusty exterior beat a kind and generous heart that observed all people, animals, birds and beasts of the field, and he cared about their welfare personally. He was a true ecologist who was generous to a fault and hated to see anything go to waste. Forever thoughtful of other people, he always remembered birthdays and holidays and tried to stay connected (even at odd hours).

Daniel is survived by his sister Paula Carl, cousins and many friends.

A memorial service for Daniel will be held on Sunday, April 12 at 2:00 pm in the Post Chapel at Fort Douglas (110 S Fort Douglas Blvd). Friends who wish can gather afterwards at a reception to toast Daniel with a Pabst and a Cuervo (or beverage of your choice). In Daniel’s honor, it will be a pesticide-free event. Please remember Daniel by living softly and using only what you need.

Although I didn't know Dan well in High School, we met through a mutual friend several years later. Whenever I would run into him, he would come bounding over to me like a puppy, over-joyed to see me. I think his spirit is still shining bright.

Dan and I sat next to each other in "Daddy Dow" Young's band class. We both played trumpet. I remember once he played two different trumpets at the same time. Mr. Young was not amused.

I knew Dan since elementary school.  He was a lovely boy.  We used to hang out on my front porch and shoot the breeze.  I will miss him this year.

I knew Daniel my whole life.  Our fathers were in WWII together and were great friends.  His dad used to bring him and his sister to our home in Provo on Sunday afternoons to visit and play.  Later, here in Salt Lake, he lived down the street from us on 17th East.  Ane then eventually he lived at our house for a couple of years.  He was like a brother to us all.  Dan was a real character and will never be forgotten.

Dan, I just knew you as a friend, not just to wave at, but to walk over and say hi. now it seems that I must say good-bye
