The news of Susan's death hit me hard. We were buddies at Roosevelt Jr. High and and spent  a lot of time doing "dumb" stuff together, like making prank phone calls. Her home and family life was so interesting to me. She had two famous siblings, her sister (Miss USA, Charlotte - who just passed away) and her brother, Ralph, a classical guitarist. Her dad, Ralph Sr. was a state legislator. I was sorry when she moved to St. George, but it was good for her. She was a cheerleader at her High School and showed me the lovely dance-like way their cheers were performed. She said she never would have tried out for anything at East because she was too shy, but in St. George, she was a big fish in a little pond. When she moved to Midway, we got back in touch because I lived for a brief time at my cabin. She was very involved in upgrading the quality of education in public schools. She told me the story of how she and Mike met and the interesting ultimatum she made that led to their marriage. If people remember the folklore around her sister Charlotte (and they should because she used to talk about it a lot at Firesides), they will remember that Charlotte vowed she would not kiss anyone unless it was over the altar after they were married. Susan's story was a little different and it showed how she had gained confidence and boundaries. I can't help but think the untimely death of her son and her quiet, modest ways had something to do with her very under-reported death from cancer.

Thanks for posting your memories of Susan, Kathy.  I was also shocked and saddened when I heard that she had died.  We were friends all through elementary and junior high into high school.  She was such a cute and talented girl and a lot of fun to be with.  She was one of my mom’s dance students so we were in dance revues together growing up and also enjoyed dancing together in assemblies at Roosevelt Jr. High.  I loved her older sisters, Judy (a good friend of my sister Jill) and Charlotte.  They were both beautiful, and when I saw the wonderful display of family pictures and video at Charlotte’s viewing and funeral I was struck by how much Susan looked like Charlotte.  They both had a classic beauty, much like Grace Kelly, and so does Judy.

Susan and I used to walk home from Douglas Elementary together and I remember how proud she was when Charlotte became Miss USA, and how Susan invited me to stop by their house on our way home from school one day after Charlotte had had her first baby and was in bed recuperating there.  She was so nice and gracious and seemed so happy to see both of us and not the least bit bothered to have company dropping in unexpectedly.  That was the first time I met her, and over the years since then I was able to get to know her a lot better through our association at church.  Her daughter-in-law, Lynne Maxfield, is currently the choir teacher at East.

Susan was a wonderful person and I love and miss her.  I’m glad she is no longer in pain.
