Dan and I worked together on a construction project one summer in high school. He was exceptionally bright, talented, funny and very popular. Everyone seemed to like Dan. I remember hearing of his death and being shocked. He died when he fell during a hiking trip, which was something he loved to do.

Daniel Hartman Rector, 46 years old, died from a fall during a hike in Little Cottonwood Canyon on Wed., September 4, 2002.

He was born July 23, 1956 in Bethesda, Maryland to Constance Rector and Hartman Rector, Jr. Dan married his beloved Lisa Lu Mallory on June 27, 1980 in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. They are the parents of four children: Sally (21), Hartman (20), Stacy (13), and Kristin (8).

Daniel graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City and Brigham Young University in Provo. He served a two-year mission in Venezuela, and later served with his parents in the California, San Diego Mission for four months. For the past six years, Dan worked for eXegeSys, Inc., a computer software company. He previously served as president and editor of Sunstone Magazine from 1986 to 1991.

Daniel was a caring husband and a devoted father, always putting the needs of his family first. He was an avid hiker, skier, and biker who fostered a love of nature and sports in his children. He often pursued outdoor adventures in the early morning hours before work, so as not to take time away from his family. Daniel was a gifted thinker, theologian, and mentor. He will be remembered as a model of vitality, genuineness, and unconditional love.

He is survived by his wife and children, his parents, and eight siblings: J. Kirk Rector, Kathryn Andersen, Laura Aston, Linda Kinsella, Lila Tueller, Tuvae Rector, John Rector, and Lucinda Morey, as well as their spouses and children, his mother-in-law Betty Lu Mallory, brother-in-law Mark Mallory, sister-in-law Connie Kelling, and many other close family members and dear friends.
