I came across this photo of Gaylen Young when I was going through some old boxes today. This is taken outside the North Carolina - Virginia mission home where Gaylen and I both served our missions, even as companions for a few months. Greg Anderson's dad and mom were our mission president and wife.

Gaylen had so many talents. He had a beautiful singing and announcing voice and was a skilled actor, a kind and compassionate friend with a great sense of humor. For a while he was the weekend disk jockey on the Salt Lake classical music station. After a stint with CNN, he landed a job as the evening news anchor in Bakersfield CA, where he worked for many years. After my divorce, my younger kids lived with their mom near Bakersfield and I'd run into him at church when I visited. He said he enjoyed being a big fish in a small pond.

His death from a car accident was such a shock. His wife Lori had died a couple of years earlier, and he still had a teenage son, Walker, as well as older children. Jim Tueller and Greg Anderson gave beautiful tributes at his funeral. I will miss him, along with many others, at the reunion.

The picture of Gaylen at the Mission Home reminded me that about a year earlier, Gaylen, Steve Richards, Terry Van Duren and myself were picked up by Greg Anderson at Fort Bragg North Carolina where we were doing our Advance Individual Training after Basic Training in the Army.  Greg's Dad had worked a miracle to get us all 4 day passes so we could spend Thansgiving weekend at the Mission Home in Roanoke, Virginia.  What a treat that was, and then to have Gaylen and Dan called to that same mission as full time missionaries was neat.

Thank you for these stories. I grew up with Greg, Gaylen, Val, Gary Nichols, Vickie Randolph, Nancy Jackson plus many more. We went to Curtis Elementary together and Steve moved into the neighborhood later. It is wonderful hearing about your later lives.
