Carolyn Ruttenburg

Carolyn Ruttenburg

Carolyn Jeanne Ruttenberg, age 57 of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away February 9, 2020. She is survived by her husband, Spencer Steinberg and daughter Hilary Steinberg, both of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Carolyn loved writing and performing music, specializing in voice and guitar. She grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and began her higher education journey at University of Utah where she double majored in vocal and guitar performance. She supported herself by singing at eateries around the University, and performed at the Park City Arts Festival, Snowbird in summer 1982.

After moving to Los Angeles, CA, she transferred to UCLA, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Theory and Composition in 1986. She also met her husband Spencer, marrying in 1987. Carolyn was a recipient of the Gil Rodin Scholarship in Popular Music. Her extracurriculars included the UCLA acapella choir, president of the UCLA Undergraduate Composer’s Association, student assistant at the UCLA Music Library, and performing in the 1984 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.

After graduating, she worked at the UCLA Archive of Popular American Music special collections library. In 1990, her daughter Hilary was born, and the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. Carolyn wrote jingles for the radio station KNPR that were aired in the early 1990s, and for many years continued to perform with several local choirs, including as a soloist at First Church Christ Scientist in Boulder City, NV.

This online memorial was created to celebrate Carolyn’s life. We would love to see friends and family share their photos, memories, and thoughts.

Carolyn was born for the spotlight!  I'm glad that she was able to share her talent, energy, and

vivaciousness with people!  I always felt jealous of Carolyn's beauty yet why, she was meant to shine

and her brilliant light had a way of shining through dark times.  I will remember her unique laugh

and how she was very friendly with everyone!
