Slick road conditions claim life of student
The winter storm that struck West Texas Thursday claimed the life of a Texas Tech freshman Saturday after she was involved in a three-car collision outside Abilene Friday.
Wendie Krueger, an 18- year old pre-med major from San Antonio, was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m. Saturday by Hendrick Hospital officials in Abilene. The driver of the car, Nancy Melomo, 18, a freshman business major from Austin, was treated and released. The two were returning to school in Lubbock.
Abilene Police Department reports indicate the accident occurred on Highway 80 West and I-20 at 2:55 p.m. Friday when Melomo reportedly lost control of her 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme on an icy overpass and slid into oncoming traffic. The car collided with a 1975 Ford truck tractor and a 1984 Silverado Suburban. Police reports indicate there was extensive damage to Melomo's car and the Suburban.
Funeral services for Krueger are scheduled for Thursday in San Antonio.

Wendie was my best friend starting from 4th or 5th grade. She was like a sister to me. I still keep in touch with her parents and I know they would love to hear memories about their daughter from fellow classmates and see any photos they might have. Do you have a story about her? Some vignette the family might not otherwise know? Maybe you just sat behind her in class and admired her silky hair. Please post. Thanks - Becky Pestana Casares

Wendie and I Talked on the phone for hours at times. Once or twice we both fell asleep and woke the next morning still connected. After graduation I kinda disappeared for a while and actually cried like a baby when I found out she had passed on. I remember in, I think it was freshman year we all went to a party. Was a spin the bottle party, anyway at that time I didnt know who I was more in "love" with Wendie or Becky. God smiled on me that night and I think all of my spins landed on one of them. Spent five minutes making out in the bathroom near the end of the party with Wendie. She was a beautiful person in mind, body and soul and the world lost someone special when she went home to god. I hope one day to see her again......

Wendy was one of the nicest people I ever met. I remember her fondly. I last saw her over the Christmas break a week before she died. We ate at Maggies, where we had been before with a Pee Wee Herman slumber party. I miss her!
