School Memories and Stories:   wearing a wig and avoiding the disciplinarian walking the hallways. and 1996 I interviewed Bill Funk for a job at the Dept. of Information Management where I was managing the IBM Warp (OS2) migration to Windows NT for MEDCOM at FT Sam Houston.I did not know Robert in school. I believe that he had transferred in at some point. He was listed in our Commencement Program as graduating July 29,1971.

Remembering Robert

Toni's memories of Robert ~ I met Robert in the Spring of 2001. My last contact with Robert was in 2021, when he updated his profile on our class website. We had sporadically exchanged emails over the years. 

Robert was an important member of our 2001 reunion planning team, as he had the IT/Technical skills to help me with our new website. He created a nostalgic slide show set to some great music, of old photos from high school days, which had been scanned by Sandy from our Olmoses. He also created a touching Memorial Slideshow, 1971-2001, set to music from Gladiator.  He ran the Audio/Video for us that evening.

Rewind to how I first met Robert. In winter | spring 2001 I was learning web design, ramping up a new class website..  and conversing with Ilse, Gordon, Sandy, Joe, and others via AIM, AOL Instant Messenger and phone calls - our little group of volunteers located all over the country, but way before social media, so communicating was slow and cumbersome. And we were all busy, working full time.

I don't recall how it came about, but somehow I reached out to Robert's company for help with web design. I was learning Macromedia Dreamweaver back in those days and I needed help. Since he'd attended Alamo Heights when we did, he was happy to help.  
I found this old email I'd saved on my laptop.  (very wierd that i still have this, since this was about 5 or 6 laptops ago, and before I retired. long before The Cloud.  Proof of the power of backups!)
I had introduced myself, told him a bit about me, my website and reunion projects. This was his reply.

It's funny how people can change over 30 years. I too have some memories but of a more general nature, from a day to day perspective kind a thing.
I am divorced with Three boys, 15, 11, 9. I live in Encino Park.
 
From 1971 I can remember .......
walking to Sunset Ridge to eat lunch at that corner drug store.
sitting at MR M's waiting for first bell to ring.
Hanging with friends at south wing waiting for the Police Officer whose name I will remember soon, to come up and run us off to class.
going to the Mule Stall
Skipping class to go to Edge Falls or Stinky Park
The heavy Set Hispanic disciplinarian who stalked the hallways looking for smokers.
The group who stole the TMI cannon and painted it pink
Driving to Zarzua Mexican food on sunset drive.
I walked to school every day from Chateau Dijon. 
My group I hung with included Bobby Tankersly, Mark Monical, Keith and Kent Stevens, Cindy Holmes. Keith Stevenson. 
My High School Sweethearts were Sandra Bogart, Patty Lumpkin & Margo Gobel 
I remember being eligible for the Draft to go fight during the height of the Vietnam War. The Military had a live in recruiter in the main office registering anyone who was 18 yo and ready to fight. 
Favorite teacher was Ms. Sandra ?????? Drama teacher
Mr. Funk math teacher
 
I remember when the library got headsets. 
We all had 8 track tapes in our cars 
JAM Productions was bringing amazing rock bands to San Antonio every week. I can remember seeing Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin Jethro Tull and many others at Convention Center and Municipal Aud. You never had enough money to see all the good bands that came one after the other.
Went to Teen Canteen at the airport
Went to some psychedelic music hangout were Mamas restaurant is now on San Pedro. You paid at the front door and once inside you could sit on huge platforms and listen to rock music while spaced-out images played on the walls and ceilings or you could rent private bungalows out back to party in. 
If Bowen lived in Olmos Park then I know him also. He and Bobby were related I think. I also knew Ilsa, who at the time went by Garrett-Frost
 
Yikes !!! I have definitely dated myself. 

After second thought I might reconsider attending the reunion. Its too much like twilight zone..

Fast forward to 2026, Rest In Peace, Robert.  I am greatful to have known you and had the opportunity to work and laugh with you during those months in 2001 ~ Toni
