Eliseo Martinez

Eliseo Guzman Martinez died peacefully the morning of September 7, 2009 in New York City, surrounded by his family. He was born February, 26, 1977 in San Antonio, Texas. Eliseo graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in English. After traveling in Thailand, New Zealand, and other parts of the globe, Eliseo moved to New York City to pursue his career as a poet and writer. He often said, "I like to write. Actually, I don't like to write, I have to write. I'm just lucky I like it." Throughout his life, he forged lasting and loving friendships in Texas and New York. He was working as a bicycle messenger at the time of his death, and he loved his job. He loved the opportunity it gave him to get to know and enjoy the city, starting with his early morning ride over the Brooklyn Bridge and into Manhattan. Eliseo is survived by his parents, Claudio and Rebecca Martinez, sister Olivia Martinez of San Antonio, TX, sister Sarah Martinez and her husband, Steve Henson, and their children, Noah and Lucy Martinez Henson of Austin, TX. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins in San Antonio. A memorial was held in New York at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, followed by a crossing of the Brooklyn Bridge. A memorial was also held at the First Baptist Church in San Antonio, TX. In his youth, Eliseo accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior. His family celebrates his brief but wondrous life, knowing they will meet once again in Glory. "Your life and my life:/ordinary miracles,/everyday magic." (2009).
