Following high school, Gary joined the Coast Guard where he served for 6 years.  He was also married during this time and had three children:  Yvonne, born 1965; Rhonda, born 1968; and Travis, born 1971.  While in the Coast Guard, he served in Alaska for three years and on the East Coast.
 
Gary spent his working career in electronics but also worked on a coffee farm in Hawaii for 11 years.  In his spare time he loved hunting and was a real gun enthusiast.
 
Gary’s sister Nancy said that Gary passed away from a massive heart attack on November 13, 2004.  He had entered the Veteran’s Hospital because of a heart atttack, and four days later he had a massive heart attack.  Gary was the oldest of four children born to Roy Arnold Rutherford and Dorothy June Bemus.  His sister Karen, born in 1948, also graduated from Lee.  His sisters Nancy, born in 1960, and Glenda, born in 1963, both graduated from Churchill.
