Doug and I lived only two blocks from each other during the two years he was on the Bugle Call staff. We worked after schools on most days, and Doug would catch a ride home with me. Unfortunately for him, that gave me extra time to lecture him on any misbehavior he and Joe Winkelmann had been involved in. He was always gracious, accepting my counsel. It was also a time for us to share what was going on in the world besides journalism, and an unlikely teacher-student friendship developed. I have a picture in my mind of him--always in a hurry--easily frustrated--involved in several areas of Lee life. I was sad to learn of his premature death.
