Don and I got to know each other at Southwest Texas State University in 1963-65. We were "next door neighbors" our sophomore year in Smith Hall.
I always felt "secure" with Don in the car. No one messed with Mr. Smith. We were coming back from Night in Old San Antonio one night and I started mouthing off to a car running next to us, heading north on Broadway. i think it was the vin rose talking. Don said, "Ennie (for Enos Slaughter), we better cool it. I think one of them reached under the dash for a pistol!." I sobered up enough to shut up!
Did I tell you, we had a running game of crazy 8 going between classes at SWT? I think he owed me $8,000! And, I'll pay for that lie when we meet up yonder!
RIP Don! You bring back many fond memories from the sixties.

What a Great guy, I played baseball and football with Don. He was soooo much better player than most of us.
I did see his wife several times later (she was living in S.A.), so we did talk about Don. Again what a great guy.
