Remembering Miss Young:
who passed away recently at 86.
A graduate of U.C Berkeley and a favorite of the class of 65, as well as others, she was a lifetime member of the California Scholastic Society, where she continued to mentor gifted students throughout her career. Claudia Hope Young wanted to be a good teacher, and she was.
A real professional, still proud of her marching band and baton prowess. Living in her well-tended Oakland home since our high school days, she loved the S.F. Ballet and Opera.
She was part of the "Bolinas Group," led by one of her husbands: Oakland psychologist Leo Zeff. Known back then as the "Secret Chief," he pioneered psychedelic therapy protocols which are still used by the VA to treat PTSD and depression.
Master gardener and gourmet cook, she had refined tastes, with an intellectual bent. She cared about her students, even after they graduated. All students, actually.
She was classy. Sometimes brassy. Occasionally sassy.
But always bright.
She called the Dean "Happy Jack."
The Bay Area shines a little dimmer now for her passing.
