Travis Ashkee Dailey April 17, 1970 - November 15, 2009 Words are impossible to convey the utter delight of your children; the impossible pains of growing up; and the smile and love of your kids. They enter our lives as the smallest of butterflies and change every person they meet as we guide them to blossom into our "butterflies". No one is impervious to their energy. Travis followed his mother, Carol Dailey (then the director of the Santa Fe Ski School) as he learned how to ski with unbridled energy. He extended his ski experiences to Ski Patrolling, being hired by the Wolf Creek Ski Basin for two years under the guidance of Kingsbury Pitcher. He went on to other great personal sport achievements; following Carlo's direction playing with the Santa Fe Soccer Club and with the Santa Fe Prep High School teams. At Santa Fe Prep, Travis achieved MVP in the area of Field Hockey â€"ultimately ending with an invitation from the US Olympic Committee to try out for the US Field Hockey Team in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Also at Santa Fe Prep Travis was the MVP for two years in Lacrosse. His experience and motivation extended beyond the Lacrosse Field, teaching Lacrosse to High School teams in Denver, Colorado area for 6 years. He loved the outdoors-being an avid camper and hunter. Travis was an outstanding fly fisherman tying his own flies and sharing camping with others. He was part of the Denver Public School system's outdoor training program. He learned how to kayak from his mother, Carol. Practicing and running the Rio Grande, the Conejos, sections of the Colorado River and lakes in Colorado. Travis loved people. His energies extended to becoming an EMT in both New Mexico and Colorado. He was a Lieutenant for several years on the Hondo Volunteer Fire Department. Travis attended the Institute of American Indian Arts studying Museum Studies, Jewelry and Pottery. He was "raised" sleeping on the floor under an exhibit case at the IAIA Museum on Cerrillos Road, where his father was in charge of the old IAIA Museum. He was also asked to be a member of an IAIA exhibit team who designed, installed and opened the "Museum of the Southwest" in Cavona, Italy in 1995. Travis moved to Denver, Colorado and became an Orthopedic Technician. He worked with the Denver "Avalanche" (ice hockey) team as a supportive medical technician for over 6 years. He was on the Denver Museum of Art's "Native American Committee" for several years. Three years ago Travis began working at the University of Colorado Native American program in Denver, where he consulted students attending College. He further worked with Native American students in the Denver Metropolitan system for High School progress. Travis just moved back to Santa Fe, where he regained his orthopedic experience in the office of Dr. Schulhofer. He was excited in seeing many of his earlier friends in Santa Fe who came to the office, and he volunteered to help Santa Fe children's football team this past fall. People loved the happiness, the encouragement and the support from our "Santa Fe Butterfly"- Travis Ashkee Dailey. Travis is survived by his father, Chuck Dailey; his sister and her husband, Buffy Jo Dailey and Richard Benally; and his nephew, Dakota Cournoyer. Services for Travis will be held at McGee Memorial Chapel on Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 11 a.m. We invite those who remember Travis to come.
