Irma Rodriguez (Vargas)
Memory of Ms Shamey, I took summer class at Samohi the summer of my Junior year in high school to avoid taking Ms Shamey's Civics class my Senior year. I heard she was a tough teacher and I wanted to keep my GPA up. Plus I wanted my Senior year to be an easier class as I had gotten all my required classes pretty much down but English and Religion, of course. But I got stuck with her anyway for another government class, Suprisingly, I enjoyed the class and learned alot - but it was alot of work. I'm glad I took her class and got to see what she was really like for myself.

Ms. Shamey was always willing to assist with college entrance concerns and I attribute her guidance as the reason I got into UCLA for my Freshman year. As a child, I often visited their famly grocery store on Marine Avenus. Her parents were always looking out for the children of the neighborhood. So sorry to hear of her passing as she was a great support to all mariner students.

I took Miss Shamey's honors history class. I had heard how tough she was, and I was a little apprehensive at first. She and Mr. Bradley turned out to be the best and favorite teachers at Saint Monica's. In college, I was an English major and history minor as a result of their influence. I want to thank her for my lifelong interest in history.

Annette Shamey taught me many things. She taught me how to construct an essay which allowed me to sail through UCLA. She taught me how to think about American History. She taught me how to keep my cool as she, one by one, in a countdown from lowest to highest grade, returned those Blue Books with our Civics exams. She shared a never ending well of enthusiasm for history and the American Dream. She was smart as a whip, absolutely unforgiving of sloppiness in any form and unwaveringly supportive of me in my college pursuits and future career. In these recent months of political turmoil, I have thought of her often. Rest in peace, and thank you for the wonderful gift of growing under your mentorship. I owe you a great debt.
