I was a friendly classmate of Mike from Junior High through Santa Rosa High School. I always regarded Mike as a larger than life person, not unlike John Wayne. His extraordinary three-sport athletic skills were truly remarkable.
Mike’s leadership skills from his involvement in student government were always outstanding from my perspective. He so easily communicated with people and seemed very at ease when he stood before the student body, delivering a speech on some topic important to us all.
I really didn’t become good friends with Mike until we were much older, long after those special school days growing up in Santa Rosa. We worked together on the class reunion committee, and it was in that environment that I got to know Mike much better. I found him to be a very warm and friendly person who continued to demonstrate great leadership and organizational skills in helping the committee advance the goal of producing a good class reunion experience for everyone. Mike also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed hanging out talking with everyone, over a beer or two.
