Rich and I were friends in high school.  He was a good guy and lots of fun. I hope he had a full life.  My prayers will be with his family.

This is a follow-up to the group email I sent to the class over the weekend when I was only 99% sure it was our Rich Herring who had passed away.  I had some difficulty contacting the family in Austin, TX, but eventually made contact with Rich's widow, Lee Herring, his wife of 40 years.  She was most appreciative of our efforts to contact family and said she would share those Class of 65 concerns during his funeral this afternoon.  She indicated that Rich's sister, who still lives in Santa Rosa, had already contacted his closest friends.  Lee told me I could share with the class that Rich passed away peacefully after a three year battle with cancer.  She said he lived a good life.  She gave me her phone number in case anyone wants to call and talk to her about Rich, 512-797-6915.

Also during the weekend, I received a confirmatory email from Rich Baril, a close friend of Rich's, who responded to the group email I had sent to the class.

Many thanks to the Press Democrat's news desk and Eric, who had the weekend duty, for making the effort to contact the Herring family and let them know we were trying to reach them.

Rich Herring was a good friend. I remember he and I waking up Rich Baril at 4:30 AM one Saturday morning so that we could go skiing. Baril didn't wake up very easily.

Rich visited Kristin and me in Leadville, CO the year after we moved there. He rode his motorcycle (BSA or Triumph......I can't remember) all the way from Cal.
