I fondly recall Bob's bright, engaging smile, unique laugh and upbeat personality. He was special.

I often visited him at his house on Slater Street (several houses south of Benton and across the street from my first intense love, Denise MacKinnon) during our Fremont Elem. and S.R. Jr. High years.  He taught me how to make gunpowder.  His dad, Chuck, was a well-known. well-liked, affable Santa Rosa butcher.  His parents were terrific people and had a casual social friendship with my parents back in the mid to late 50's.

I always really enjoyed Bob and was shocked and very saddened to hear, back then, about his too-early death.  I vaguely recall hearing (can't remember where) that he died in his sleep and that it might have been related to undiagnosed sleep apnea (but don't take that as fact, please.)

Wow . . .  so long ago.  Bob, my friend ... I hope we can make some more gunpowder in the Hereafter.

Bob Townsend was another memorable character from our class I was privileged to know.  He seemed to have an everpresent smile or grin on his face like he knew something that the rest of us were about to find out.  When it came to athletics, Bob was ubiquitous (I've been looking for a place to use that word).  It didn't matter if it was football, basketball, or baseball, Bob seemed to be there contributing not only his skills, but also his humor.  God bless you Bob.  - Mike

Mike Grace, who interacted with Bob much more during their post-H.S. days, has clarified that he died of a heart attack in January 1999, while watching TV.  Gone these 15 years and yet still so present in my memories.
