I had the opportunity to know Steve many years after graduation. We were both in the wine business. Turns out he was close to Toad Hollow Vineyards management. I met him again in Healdsburg a few years before he died. I attended the home service for Steve, and was amazed at the number of home grown Santa Rose families and business folks who were at his home. I had the opportunity to ensure that his year book photo, with his car is running during our graduation event. What a great guy.
Steve and I were friends since junior high school, we lived only four houses away from each other, across the street from Herbert Slater Junior High. We would play basketball after school, which he would beat me at on a fairly regular basis. Steve was also very good at bowling, I believe his grandmother owned the bowling alley on Montgomery Avenue, so he was probably at a semi pro level at one time. Steve was also into cars, big time, which was good for me too, because I got to ride with him to school a couple of times each week. His first cool car was a burgundy hotrod 1940 Ford sedan with the custom 59 T-Bird as its replacement, which is the car in the year book. Steve worked at LADS market for many years after high school, we would talk any time I saw him there, and by this time he owned a 1969 Shelby 500 convertible. The best thing about Steve was that he was a genuine kind person, the type of person you would want as a friend.
I've known Steve since 2nd. Grade at Fremont elementary, Mrs. Winklemiller's class. He was a whiz at kickball. Great guy. We are losing way too many of our classmates.
Steve was a quiet gentleman with a lot of talent. Although we both went to Fremont, I did not know him then. Was pleased to take a photo of Steve in the MHS parking lot in front of his T-Bird for the Saga. Only wish I had known this guy more.
