Doug and I met at Village Elementary and we became fast friends.  We went to Herbert Slater and Montgomery together and two years later Doug transferred from SRJC to UC Davis where we both attended.  Doug was in my wedding and I was in his.  We lost touch with each other after I went into the Army but we reconnected in 1985.  Every year we would call each other on our respective birthdays.  Sadly Doug was diagnosed with cancer and fought a heroic battle for nearly 10 years.  During this time we had a chance to play golf a few times and attend a Giants playoff game.  On one occasion Doug told me about a book, The Anatomy of Hope by Jerome Groopman,MD.  This is a marvelous book for patients and families that are struggling with serious health issues, particularly cancer.  After reading the book I decided to purchase multiple copies to loan out to my patients and their families.  Doug is survived by his wife and two lovely daughters.  I miss him greatly and often think of his smiling face and great love of sports.
