Louie was a friend of mine from the early, early years at Graded. He was small, skinny because of some health condition, and missed school a lot. But he made up for it with spunk and humor, often being mildly reprimanded teachers for laughing or joking in class.

He could also be deeply caring. When the deadly "deshidratação" epidemic swept São Paulo in about 1967 and I ended up in the Hospital Samaritano, it was Louie (through his mom, who was a teacher) who worried about me and sent his good wishes. I imagine he'd seen his share of hospitals and knew what I was going through.

In high school, Louie finally bulked out and became a teenager. His mischievous streak served him well in the ubiquitous poker games played at lunch and after school with Walter Ng and a few others. Fully fluent in both English and Portuguese, Louie was comfortable talking to just about anybody. However, like many fellow Graded "natives," he gave wide berth to any newly-arrived Americans who couldn't accept that they weren't in Kansas any more.

A ready laugh, a boisterous nature, and quick to embrace a friend: that's how I remember Louis de Souza. He spent a lot of senior year hanging out with Tina Hugerth, another long-timer with a warm smile. It's so strange that they both died young. I hope they found each other and are having a reunion of their own.

Judy Hover (Olson) (1973)

Louis had very wavy hair, a big smile , but it was that twinkle in his eyes that made me wonder what he was up to.As the new kid on the block and with a name like Hover , he never failed to call me Hovercraft.Thank heavens it wasn't after the vacuum cleaner. He also had a mean fute bol kick and was quick on his feet.I remember him sitting on the cafeteria table ,watching , smiling and observing very quietly, but ready to respond with a snappy answer.I know he is in a better place and throwing a lot of check-mates around.Peace and smooth sailings to you Louis...
