Deceased Classmate: Bonnie Garland (1974) Date Deceased: July-7-1977 Age at Death: 21 Cause of Death: murder Classmate City: Scarsdale, NY Classmate State: NY Classmate Country: USA Survived By: Brothers Patrick (76?), John Carlos (78?), Cathy (7??), and parents Paul and Joan Garland
Bonnie and I were very close growing up in Brasil, and I used to frequentar her house in Rua Sao Benedito, as well as in Praia Grande. She left Graded in Junior High to go to Madeira School in Virginia, and we saw each other through the years. We spent a few weeks together before she went to Yale- in fact I accompanied her as her parents dropped her off to college, in 74. The winter before Bonnie's death, she surprised me as I was processing into a church with my choir (College of William and Mary) on tour in Connecticut. She used to do this-- aparecer do nada. We hung out that day, as she told me about her experiences at Yale, and her budding musical career. Bonnie had the most amazing voice, and was a star soloist of the Yale Glee Club. [That Xmas the Glee Club launched a Xmas album with Bonnie singing Amazing Grace; she sang like an angel.] That day Bonnie told me about her Mexican boyfriend, a former Yalie who was living in Texas. It was this boyfriend who in July of 77 brutally bludgeoned her in her parents house in Scarsdale. It was a terrible tragedy, even more so when the Yale Catholic community set up a defense fund for him, making him the victim.... I am in frequent contact with her parents, who now live in FLorida and Maryland, and even lived with them in 1982, when I was deciding whether or not to stay in the US. I still think of Bonnie whenever I hear or sing Amazing Grace, or Thompson's Alleluia (which was sung at her memorial service). Her voice and smile will always be with me.
