Lena Rotenberg (1974)

I was shocked when Fernanda de Figueiredo told me a few years ago that Beatriz had passed away. I'd not had news of Bia in decades, but will always remember her as a smart, freckled, black-haired girl with a huge smile and sweet disposition. She also was very authentic. Contrary to some of us Brazilian girls, she didn't feel the need to wear the latest fashions or to impress others with long reports about exciting weekends.

Another thing I'll always remember was Bia's very peculiar handwriting -- upright and somewhat distended (if I could fit 8 words on a line, Beatriz could only fit 4). I tried to emulate her handwriting to the extent that mine became forever schizophrenic, undecided if it should be upright or slanted, compressed or extended. I remember writing Beatriz long handwritten letters when she spent a year in Vevey, Suisse -- I think it was called "finishing school" -- and I remember her handwriting on the envelopes that she sent back to me. Wherever you are, fare well, Bia.
