One comment I've received consistently in person and via e-mail is that Bill did not have a mean bone in his body; I have to agree. He also had a tremendous amount of courage to face all that life threw at him. He taught English and worked in Real Estate in Sao Paulo, and raised a wonderful daughter, Paloma. He was a very dedicated employee and everybody, especially his boss, adored him. Bill's health was not the best, as he smoked and had a clot removed from a vein in his leg 2 years ago. The operation was pretty serious, and left a large scar up his leg starting almost at the ankle. He stopped smoking after the operation, which was good, and had started a walking regime around his neighborhood. Bill died of a pulmonary edema and heart failure related to his heart valves. (in Portuguese, it was "Valvulopatia Cronica Aortica", in addition to "Edema Pulmonar and "Insuficiencia Cardiaca") He was throwing up a lot on Tuesday and Wednesday, but still managed to go to work at his job teaching English on Wednesday, as providing well for his family had always been his dream - even though he struggled mightily to do so in Brazil's uneven economy. On Thursday his wife Elaine took him to the hospital and he went downhill quickly after being admitted. Bill took everything in stride during his last week. His wife said he never complained about all the pain and shortness of breath. I think Bill knew his time was short, as he told his daughter Paloma on Wednesday night that he was going to die and that he loved her very much. The funeral was on Saturday August 9th at Horto da Paz close to Itapecerica da Serra where he lived. Douglas Jafet and Ligia Abs Andre from Graded made it to the funeral, for which I am grateful.
