In Memory

Rolf Hak - Class Of 1977

Unfortunately we have sad news to report. I received news that Rolf Hak was killed on July 26th. Kim Dunn forwarded and e-mail from Rolf's sister Olga. Olga asked Kim to share this news with Rolf's friends, and rather than paraphrase her e-mail, I include it below:

Dear Kim,

It is my very sad duty to inform you that Rolf's body was found last July 26 in the outskirts of Sao Paulo. Most likely he was shot and killed during a kidnapping or carjacking gone awry--we probably never will know what exactly happened. My parents were vacationing in France, and they arrived back in Sao Paulo on the same day as my husband, daughter and I did from Chicago.

The cremation took place on July 31, attended by numerous friends and colleagues. We also received many, many phone calls from friends all over the world, and find some comfort in knowing how much his friends loved him.

I know that Rolf was excited about the prospect of a possible reunion with high school classmates, and that he has made contact with several of them, both via e-mail and in person, over the last year or so. Therefore I am asking that you be kind enough to help us out by sending this news out to your classmates. My parents will be travelling in the US during Sept and Oct., and will also be here at home with me during part of that time. In the event anyone wants to contact us, here are the various contact points: e-mail at a.jacobi@worldnet.att.net

Home address & phone: 1109 Dawes St., Libertyville, IL 60048-3507 (+1 847 367-0657)

Thanks so much to you, and continued good luck with your reunion.

Sincerely,

Olga Hak Jacobi

About a year or so before our 25 year class reunion, Rolf had looked up a number of classmates by e-mail & become reacquainted with us. He went out of his way to call & have a long conversation with me on the phone & I know he called others as well. He was really looking forward to seeing everyone again and was instrumental in connecting people & raising enthusiasm about our gathering. Sadly, Rolf tragically passed away before the event. He loved life, his family & friends.

Rolf also called me shortly before his trip. We had a lovely long chat and agreed that would contact me on his way back so we could get together in person.

I will always remember his ever-ready (no pun intended!) smile and love of life.broken heart
