Although cognitive psychologists have claimed that the sense of smell evokes our most vivid memories, I have always subscribed to the notion that another sense supersedes the olfactory one.

First identified in the 5th century BC by the ethnographer Herodotus, this "sixth-sense" (as it was called at the time) was observed to be more prevalent among the half of the population that lacked the Y-chromosome.  A complete description of this theory can be found in his little-known essay entitled "Sense of Shoes" (or was it called "Sensible Shoes"?)

To summarize, he purported that a woman's memory was most closely linked with the shoes that either she--or another woman who was present at the time--was wearing when a particular event occurred.  Example:  "Honey, do you remember what year this photo was taken in?  "Let me see, dear, ahhh...that must have been 1976 because I'm wearing Earth shoes." *

Which brings me to my first memory of Leigh-Ann Sullivan.  It was Leigh-Ann's first day at Mohave Elementary; she was the new kid who had just arrived from California.  We were in Mr. Colby's 7th grade math class; we were seated about three rows from the front of the room; she was in the adjacent aisle in the desk to my left.

And she was wearing a pair of shoes that none of us had ever seen before.

When we asked her about them she glanced around the room at the assorted footwear before responding "What, no one in Arizona knows about Wallabees?  Everyone in California is wearing them."  And not long thereafter, everyone at Mohave was wearing them too.  Thank you, Leigh-Ann, for introducing us to sensible shoes.

Shari,

What an incredible memory you have!  I can't believe you not only remember the class, but where we were sitting...unbelievable!!  Good old wallabees...which did come back a few years ago.  I had to laugh when I was recently in Nordstrom and saw Sbicca's.  I lived in Sbicca's at Saguaro...guess I should have hung on to them, I could have worn them to the reunion!   Can't wait to see you in September Shari!

Leigh-Ann
