It is with considerable sadness that I pass on the news that my old friend Bob Lloyd passed away. Bob and I hung out together quite a bit in the early '70s.
Bob moved to Houston in the mid-70s. He had made friends with a KDKB DJ named David Fennimore who covered the graveyard shift at KDKB in the early 70s. Fennimore taught Bob how to operate the board at KDKB. Bob was very into music. So when Fennimore moved to Houston for a job at another station, Bob followed. For a few years he had the Buffalo Chip Bob show at the Houston station. Ever since then, his nickname, and in fact what a lot of people called him, was Buffalo. He married and had a son they named Wright Frank Lloyd. Wright died tragically at a very young age (traffic accident, I think). The death of Wright took a heavy emotional toll on Bob, no doubt.
"I received this from Don McMullin today: Buffalo and I have tried to stay in touch since he returned to Phoenix, he lived with me for a short time. He returned to clean himself up and to spend time with his parents during their decline, then he tried to help with his brother Chuck. I knew he was not doing well last time we talked in late winter, and tried to contact him this summer but know answer. Last Saturday for some reason I got anxious about not being able to contact him and call Mickey Phoenix a common friend in Houston. She did not answer so left a message. She called me on Tuesday with the news of his death. I attached a message from Mickey.
He is now with his son Wright Frank Lloyd." [From Mickey Phoenix]: "Bob has been sick for many years. He moved to Phoenix, AZ to be with his parents and get away from Houston. Eventually his decline in health forced him to move to Dallas to be with his brother Scott. He has been in intensive care for the last 2 months and this last week lost consciousness and passed away. We talked a lot the last year or two.. the last phone call was before he went in to the hospital…he knew he was not doing well, but never complained.. he was always Buffalo. I know that we will all miss him. He was one of a kind. Absolutely the best tee shirt printer I knew…my friend."

Got confirmation from Don McMullin that Buffalo Bob Lloyd passed away in Dallas about a week ago. This photo is Buffalo with his long-time friend Mickey Phoenix, taken in 1974 in Houston.
Mary W. Black I did not know him but I am very sorry you lost your friend. That is always so hard.
Susie Hecker Taylor Very sad, we lost another classmate. It'd be nice if we could muster up another photo. You mentioned he is now with his son, did he also lose a son? Very sad.
Avtar Khalsa He turned me on to so much good music long ago. I'd walk into his room and he'd just say "Listen to this." Then he'd put these big head phones over my ears and it would be "Dark Side of the Moon" or "Tea for the Tillerman" or T-Rex, or Jackson Browne's first album, or some Jethro Tull or the Holy Modal Rounders. He was working the night shift at a self-serve gas station, and he would call up KDKB and request songs from David Fennimore who did the late night shift at KDKB. Fennimore was so impressed with Buffalo's taste in music that he invited him down to the studio when he got off work at Whiting Brothers. David would let Buffalo put some sets of music together and play them on the air. That was Buffalo's entry into radio broadcasting. When Fennimore moved to Houston, Buffalo followed and soon had his own show -- the Buffalo Chip Bob Show.

So many high memories with this fellow clown, so sorry to learn of his passing. A few that come to mind as I remember them, auto shop together with Bob and had brought his old woody in and was working on trying to get it to run better. He had rebuilt the carb and was trying to get it started, no luck. Maybe a little primer of gas down the throat of the carb will help, he leans over the engine so he can see down the carb to pour gas in it. I don’t remember who was manning the ignition but Bob yelled try it again, boom with a big ball of fire comes out of the carb. Bob didn’t quite get back away from the carb fast enough, eyes lashes, brows and front part of hair gone. Barryhill, auto shop teacher was yelling and laughing at the same time. Too damn funny.
One other quick one, Bob came to school one day with his feet painted brown and had painted shoelaces on his feet too, only Bob. I don’t think he got caught and sent home until 3rd period.......

Thanks, Greg! I seem to recall that story making the rounds at the time. Thanks for the memory and the smile this morning. Kathryn

Buffalo's (Bob Lloyd's) longtime friend Mickey Phoenix posted it on FB after Bob passed. I don't know if he actually played that bass sax, but I love the photo

Bob Loyd was our dear class clown, that comic relief we all needed so much. He was a free spirit who was not inclined to follow those school rules that most of us surrendered to. Bob made our time spent at Scottsdale High School more fun. R.I.P.

Bob and I were in the same English class with Ms Peterson our junior year. Peterson had a somewhat unique policy that, if you were feeling so bad you just couldn't participate in class, you could sit at a table at the back of the classroom. When sitting there you were facing the back of the classroom. But you were not allowed to sleep while sitting there. Bob discovered that, with his broad back and shoulders, he could stand his notebook up, place a book on top of the notebook parallel to the table top, rest his chin on the book, and nap undetected. I don't think anyone else could have pulled that off, but I watched him do it multiple times that year.
